*This national centre for brain injury rehabilitation was established in 1979 and aims to work with adults with acquired brain injury so that their rehabilitation allows them to reach an optimum level of independence and well being.

Kemsley offers services for people between the ages of 18 and 64 with an acquired brain injury. Our primary role is to serve people whose difficult to manage behaviour may deny them access to other rehabilitation services.

Service Description

SRVdivKEM_bullet*A range of purpose built facilities, some locked, allowing patients to be placed with those whose needs are similar.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Regular assessment of progress in rehabilitation under the supervision of the Medical Officer and multi-disciplinary team with reviews at agreed intervals.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Ward based multi-disciplinary teams, providing 24 hour nursing and medical cover, together with a full range of rehabilitation therapies.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Appropriately structured and supervised programmes of specialised rehabilitation focusing on the needs of the individual.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Patients with difficult to manage behaviour excluded from other rehabilitation services can frequently be accommodated.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Opportunities to progress through appropriate stages under a single service provider.

Patient Profile

The Kemsley Service is suitable for:
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Adults with acquired brain injury, whose physical, cognitive, emotional and /or behavioural problems require rehabilitation within an in-patient setting.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Patients who retain capacity and are able to consent to in-patient treatment as well as those detained under the Mental Health Act(1983).
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Patients who have rehabilitation needs based on brain injury and at any stage after the injury.

Our clients may have physical, communication or swallowing problems
requiring specific rehabilitation, medical conditions such as epilepsy or psychiatric conditions (which may require them to be detained under the
Mental Health Act)

Facilities

SRVdivKEM_bullet*Kemsley comprises five separate ward areas allowing each to incorporate design features appropriate to the needs of the patient group.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Together these units provide a rehabilitation pathway, with accommodation ranging from locked facilities, for safety purposes, to open accommodation with a focus very much on graded return to the community.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Kemsley enjoys a privileged position on the St Andrew’s campus, opposite the cafeteria and health club and overlooking the golf course.

SRVdivKEM_bullet*Support and assistance in activities and tasks of daily living.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Staff qualified and skilled in identification and understanding of the needs created by brain injury, coupled with the resources to assist, educate and facilitate patients in their rehabilitation towards an agreed optimal level of independence.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Assisting the patient to make optimal use of any disability.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Creating a therapeutic environment based on positive spirit, achievement and reinforcement, with staff skilled in creating positive outcomes out of negative situations.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Supporting patients, and their families, with problem solving and coping strategies, particularly for changes to personal circumstances and life plans.
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Supporting patients with community skills, living options and lifestyles.


Berkeley Close - Slow Stream Community Rehabilitation Service

*This service opened in 2003 and has been designed for people who have already completed a programme of ABI rehabilitation, and/or are inappropriately placed either in a hospital, care home or domestic setting. It is ideal for people who require longer term care in a specialised, safe and structured environment.

This service provides:

SRVdivKEM_bullet*Purpose built community based accommodation
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Supported access to leisure and work
SRVdivKEM_bullet*Emphasis on maintaining rehabilitation gains and quality of life
