The Adult Learning Disability Service offers specialised services for adults with mild/borderline learning disabilities and challenging behaviour who may also have a mental health problem and/or a forensic history

We believe that people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour have the right to have their needs met. We recognise that they may require additional help and support to overcome the obstacles their behaviour presents.

Service Description

SRVdivADD_bullet*Medium secure treatment and rehabilitation facilities for adults with mild/borderline learning disability and forensic needs.
SRVdivADD_bullet*Single sex facilities on more secure areas

Patient Profile

The Adult Learning Disability Service is for:
*SRVdivADD_bullet*People with mild or borderline learning disability with forensic needs, many of whom have a mental illness
SRVdivADD_bullet*People detained under the Mental Health Act (1983)
SRVdivADD_bullet*People aged 18 to 50 years
SRVdivADD_bullet*People in needs of specialist assessment and treatment programmes to address their offending behaviour in a secure environment

Treatment Philosophy

Key features of the programme include:
SRVdivADD_bullet*A comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment completed within 4 - 6 weeks of admission
SRVdivADD_bullet*An intensive programme, consisting of a mix of individual and group therapies based on cognitive behavioural, psychodynamic and creative therapy principles, tailored to the individual’s intellectual level. These include self-esteem, assertion, anger management, relaxation, substance abuse and social skills.
SRVdivADD_bullet*Adherence to the Care Programme Approach. Although a national provider, we aim to foster close links with the individual’s local agencies.
SRVdivADD_bullet*Transfer to rehabilitation service within a less secure environment when risk has reduced
SRVdivADD_bullet*A multi-disciplinary team approach comprising medical, nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, art therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, education, dietetics and social work services.
SRVdivADD_bullet*Access to a full range of dental and primary healthcare services
SRVdivADD_bullet*Specialist treatment programmes to address offending behaviours

SRVdivADD_bullet*Individual assessment of need including personality, offending behaviour and other presenting problems
SRVdivADD_bullet*Treatment programmes address specific offending behaviours and are tailored to the individual’s cognitive ability
SRVdivADD_bullet*Drug and alcohol awareness programme
SRVdivADD_bullet*Treatment programmes continue throughout the service, while environment is dependent upon risk

Facilities

Secure Services:
Geoffrey Hawkins - 17 male medium secure beds

Victoria House - 7 female secure beds

Rehabilitation Service:
Bradlaugh House - 9 low secure rehabilitation mixed beds

SRVdivADD_bullet*Introduction to hobbies and group activities
SRVdivADD_bullet*Extensive indoor and outdoor recreational facilities
SRVdivADD_bullet*Workbridge Centre offering vocational training and experience in appropriate work settings
SRVdivADD_bullet*On-site cafeteria and shop
SRVdivADD_bullet*The service actively supports research and offers a learning environment to under/post graduate students
